The Greats decided they just couldn't handle Shreveport, or the long drive. Lee, myself and my mother drove to Bob Sandlin Lake where my parents lived for many years to take Pop's ashes. Visited with some old friends while we were there. We took Pop's ashes to the end of the boat dock on their old property, it was the perfect place for him. It is beautiful there and the sun was shining bright!! RIP Larry Gilbert.
I think the Greats really enjoyed having the house to themselves while we were out of town.. First time since we moved we left them unsupervised. I told them " no running naked through the house or sex on the kitchen table". My brother came over both days we were gone and Mama even made him dinner.....microwave dinner put on a china place and canned corn. I really don't think she is missing cooking. She mentioned last week when we were iced in that "if she could ever get to her bread maker, she'd make bread all the time" I got it out and re-arranged the counter tops so she had a place to use it. I got it out Thursday, it's Sunday no bread yet. LOL
The Great, Bob, failed the stress test to get a release for his back surgery. He was supposed to have an angeogramn last Friday. However we were having the most beautiful snowstorm and we have to reschedule it. Taking him to the Thyroid Dr. tomorrow. He told me he was tired of going to Dr's. I told him unless he gets up off his ass and does some exercise his physical condition will just keep getting worse. He agreed to join the city's gym where they have a walking track.
It's all fine and good for me to keep reminding him he needs to exercise, it's easier said than done. I have stopped going to the gym since we moved and gained about 30 lbs. If I am going to be able to take care of everyone here I have to take care of myself!! Started a low carb diet and Mother, Bob and myself joined the city gym. Hoping we can motivate each other and all feel better....plus I gotta loose some weight for our girls cruise the end of March. Of course we joined and the next day the 4 days of unbelievable wet, cold and then snowy days hit Dallas this last Superbowl week and we haven't gotten to go yet.
We all enjoyed the snow, Mama got to have some snow ice cream, but I had the most fun. Growing up in Texas snow was a rarity so snow days have always been special to me. I used to get the kids up in the middle of the night to build snowmen, because most of the time I knew it would be gone by morning. Snow angels, snow ball fights and just everything looking so beautiful and white. Friends picked me up on Friday when we had about 8 inches and took me to do donuts in their 4-wheel drive vehicle....it was a blast. Thank you lord for the snow, sorry so many people had to miss work, but I think everyone enjoyed the extra time home with their families, thanks for that too.
The Grandfather will have a birthday Feb. 15, Mama broke her hip on his birthday last year. Mothers birthday is March 3 and Mama will be 92 on March 12. Everyday with them is a blessing and I love that we all get to live and grow old together. How did we ever get so lucky? Love you Lee.

A Grand Loss
Pop Gilbert passed away on December 29th. The surgeon had scheduled surgery for him on the 27th to do a heart valve replacement. He decided not to have the surgery, I think he didn't feel he would live through it. We took him to the Dr. to be sure he understood the consequences, and had the mental ability to make that decision. After our visit with the Dr. we felt we had to respect his wishes. The Dr. said he would have less than a year, but that his heart could just give up at any time. Loving and missing him, but knowing he's in a better place than this. We had a wonderful memorial for him on January 8th which celebrated a life well lived in service to others....RIP Pop!!
I decided that rather than buy the Grand kids a "disposable" toys for Christmas that we would give them a memory instead. So Lee, myself and our good friend Heather took 6 of our grand kids and her son, Nicholas, to Medieval Times on December 21...it was a blast. I think it's the best time I ever had with the Grand kids, and I think it's because their parents weren't there!!LOL.
So I had decorated the inside and outside of the house for Christmas, the inside of the club for Christmas and a Luau on New Years...had all my ducks in a row, all my balls juggling just fine ready for the holidays and I got sick as a dog. Spent the entire holidays sick. Had to cancel the big family get together. Had to cook for and oversee the Christmas party at the Club benefiting the outreach center...sick. Got up Christmas morning and pushed through to finish making Christmas dinner...sick. Then put on a New Years Eve Luau....sick. Life showed me, thought I was on top of things and instead I was sick.
So now we're 5 and Life with the Grands goes on with one less Grand.
Planning a girls cruise in March...Mama is still debating whether she'll go or not. If she does we'll have 4 generations of women on the trip, which would be really special. I just don't know if she's up to the confusion and chaos of a cruise ship and neither is she. So far 16 gals going....mothers, daughters, mother-in-laws and perhaps a Great Great grandmother.
The Grandfather Bob has to have some minor back surgery and has a problem with his remaining thyroid gland, hopefully all will go well with that and we can get him exercising, along with the rest of us.
Lee and I will have our 16th wedding anniversary next week. I believe this move with the Grands has really made out marriage stronger and helped us realize how much we love each other and how lucky we are to be together. So to celebrate we're taking the Grands and going to Shreveport to the casino's and make our donations.LOL
Pray for us in our new year and keep us in your thoughts. My prayer 2011 is that we all see it through to the end and enjoy loving and living together....PEACE!!

Grand Hand
Monday night is date night for Lee and myself. A few weeks ago we were able to meet our son Chris, his wife Kelli and their 2 sons Jordan and Jax for dinner. I had a really good time, enjoyed spending time with them and realized that there is another element to Life with the Grands that I still hadn't mentioned.....Grand children. Oops!!
We are a family with five generations. I have teased our friends that we are like a hand. Little finger: grandchildren, ring finger: children, index finger: parents, thumb: grandparents....which of course leaves us as the middle finger....and everyone knows it's significance!!LOL
Unfortunately working @ a night club has been a hindrance in being the type of grandparent I would like to be. The little monsters get up about 2 hours after I go to bed so timing has always been a problem. Hopefully time will rectify this situation and someday I'll be less of a disappointment as a grandmother. Being that middle finger is a giant guilt trip, because I can never seem to give the rest of the fingers enough of what they need or would like to expect of me....
Back to our dinner though. Jordan is autistic. He was gifted to parents that have been phenomenal with him. He is so happy, fun and loving. Unless he's having a rough time, he has a big smile on his face and you can see the joy of life in his eyes. Jax was just added to our family this year and he's a rolly-polly little boy with a big old smile who looks just like the Ratt he is, poor little fella..LOL.
We have 8 grandchildren so far...Sarah...and they are all extremely cute. Some are brats, like their parents. Some are smart, like me. Some have talent, like their Papa Ratt...but most importantly all of them are loved!!!
The bad news today is that Pop Gilbert is in the hospital. His heart is operating @ 25% capacity. He is retaining fluid around his heart and lungs. Don't know how much you know about dementia, but an illness is even more difficult with this condition. Pop is having a really hard time being out of his element with people prodding and poking him. Hopefully by Monday we'll know final test results, but so far it seems he needs open heart surgery to repair a heart valve. The Doctors seem concerned that surgery might be more than he can handle, so keep him in your prayers please.
We were blessed to have a wonderful Thanksgiving with 37 family members @ our youngest daughter Sarah and her husband Richard's home. Still have turkey in the freezer, and still eating stuffing, my Mom makes the best!!!
Had a little conflict over the Christmas tree. The Great, Mama, said she was "over" having a tree. She said it so many times Mom finally pointed out she always had one when she was my age and mom's age and asked her if "she really felt the need to ruin it for everyone". She puffed up for 2 days. Then after I shopped 3 stores and gathered up lights and everything to decorate outside and talked my brother Dan into helping me put them up, she remarked that "Dan had done the outside of the house and that he did a really good job, and that's what you were supposed to do for Christmas so everyone could see your decorations" OOOHHH....I'm still smiling even though between doing the inside and outside I could hardly move for 2 days!!
I can't sign off tonight without mentioning my husband Lee. Our family is so blessed to have Lee be a part of it. He is more than a son in law to the parents and grandparents, and a super grandfather to all the little fingers. Lee loves us like he was born to us and is there to support when we need picked up. He works hard to keep our home comfortable for everyone and for some reason "loves me like crazy".
I love you Lee, your my backbone, and I couldn't do this crazy life without you....

I love my grands!!
Too long since my last post...but there are days I just can't seem to get to it!!
We finally got our new exercise machine, it vibrates you to good health. Claims to burn up to 350 calories in a 10 minute workout, we'll see. Both the Grandfathers have lymphodemia and it's supposed to help with that, be good for diabetes and circulation. All I know for sure is that it makes you tighten up all your muscles, so it can't hurt. The greatgrandfather has been using it 2 times a day but the grandfather says he's not getting on "that thing". Neither will the greatgrandmother. Mom's done it a few times and I'm trying to do 3 times a day.
I put together Halloween costumes for everyone, they looked so cute when they went to the party @ the senior center. The greatgrandfather didn't wear his because "his back hurt". I'll post their pictures when I pick up the film. I had to have 3 costumes, 2 for work and 1 for a party we went to. Lee and I decorated the front of the house and we had some trick or treaters, just enough to be fun, but not so many to be a pain. We had alot of candy left which dissapeared the next day. I'm guessing somebody has candy stashed in their rooms, not calling any names but mother found 2 stashes so far in Pop's drawers...LOL.
Mother and I went to Garden Ridge and bought a Christmas tree on sale. Got home with it and Mama wanted to know where we were going to put it. Told her and she said " that will look terrible" and she is "done with Christmas..blah, blah, blah". Mother asked her if she really needed to try and ruin it for everyone, reminded her she always had a tree when she was our age. Mama just walked out of the room. Something was mentioned @ dinner the next night about Christmas and I told them since I was sitting next to Scrouge I had no comment. She gave me that "Look" but no comment.
Took the greatgrandfather, Bob, to get his hearing aid @ the VA but having a hard time getting him to wear it. He came to the dinner table last night with no glasses, no hearing aid and his hair sticking straight up. He couldn't see, had to have everything repeated and when I mentioned his hair showed me how he had scratched his head which caused the hairdo. I ended up laughing so hard I almost spewed Frito's all over the table. Mama didn't think it was funny @ all.
She was already in a bad mood. Mother and I had gone grocery shopping without her and stayed gone "too long". When Mama is unhappy lookout. Made it up today and took her to Tom Thumb, just her and me so she could pick out some things "she would like" Commented the other day she "wished she could decide what she was going to eat sometimes". The next night I made Chili dogs and about the time they were ready I asked her if she was eating what we were having or "going to make herself something she liked". Mama huffed up and said "she certainly wasn't eating a chili dog"!! So she had a hot dog instead.....thank god she saved the calories from the chili. On our outing today I asked her about her bad mood yesterday and she said she had gotten depressed because she was bored. Bored = bitch... yeah!!
Pop's health seems to be worse by the day. I really think alot of is caused by depression. He isn't interested in doing anything and spends way too much time just looking out the window or looking for mom. He is now getting physical therapy 2 times a week but gets mad @ mom when she encourages him to do his exercise the rest of the week. His dementia causes him to snap off at her and she just doesn't know how to handle it. Wish we could find them some kind of support group but everything is in Dallas so no help yet.
No matter what happens though I am still glad we're all together. I love my grands and an thankful every day for my husband and his support and help with them. He's "the man"!!
Tonights date night, not sure what's in store, but I'm ready to go so more later.

Happy Grand Hump Day
It's Wednesday again, Bingo day for the Grands and delivery day for me at the club. Also hoped for a big day for the Texas Rangers..oh well, tomorrow is another day on that front. Got home and although the Grand father loves sports he hadn't realized the big game was on and then couldn't find the right channel on TV. Got him settled in for some baseball action, found out the Grand mothers had gone shopping and headed to the kitchen to start dinner. The hardest part about cooking dinner for the family is deciding what to cook.
Decided on beef fajitas and got busy. Mom got home and pitched in setting the table after she and Mama showed off their purchases. Had to show everyone how to make a fajita. Offered Mama a flour tortilla and she replied "I guess I'll try to eat one"! Rolled them up and went to town, everyone seemed to enjoy their dinner and of course we had to have dessert. All 4 Grands are diabetics, but require dessert after both lunch and dinner. Sat and talked awhile over sock it to me cake and then the real fun began.
Cleaned up the kitchen and then began preparations for the Red Hats luncheon @ our home tomorrow beginning at 11:30. I fear I'll never get 8 hours sleep again. Dusted and ran the vacuum while mom worked on her new treat for lunch. A slice of thin ham spread with soft cheese then rolled around a long pretzel, which is really weird. However Mama's dish for tomorrows lunch is sauerkraut salad so just when I thought it couldn't get any weirder it did!!
I will be like the kid at lunch, but they are a great group of little old ladies who seem to like me even if I do run a bar (and smoke). I don't smoke around the Mama though. I told her I would quit if she would move here from Amarillo and I haven't done it yet...don't think I can as long as I work @ the club. 56 years old and hiding the fact that I smoke from my Mama, how embarrassing is that?
Everyone except Lee and I finally hit the hay about 10:30, so I finished up my chores and waited on him to finish his. Lee gave up his music room at our old house and has been very patient with all the remodeling and projects that came 1st. Finally this week the work changing the 2 car garage into his music studio has gotten to the point he started unpacking and arranging his things...4 months since the move mind you.
How many husbands would sacrifice the peace and tranquility of all the kids finally leaving home to move in his wife's parents and grand parents, not many I reckon....I am a very lucky woman. In addition to having all the Grand parents I also have a Grand husband, Lee you are the bestest!! He actually went on line and looked up senior citizens jokes to tell them at dinner tonight, had them all rolling on the floor...not really but they did love the jokes and it would have taken forever to get them all up if they had..
When he finally came in from his studio we watched Survivor. I wanted to be on that show a few years back, but realize now I'm just not up to it. It's 3:30 am and I've been out on the patio having my bed time smoke. Guess I better get in and go to bed so I'll be up and at'em for Red Hats tomorrow. We're going to play a game called LRC, checked it out last night and it is fun. Very little thought required, just what I need.
Say a little prayer for our Grand family and sweet dreams to yours!!

Grand total of 3 days!!
Such a busy weekend, didn't have time to blog. Woke up Friday and made Eggs Benedict for lunch then the physical therapists came to see the great grands the afternoon. Went to the bank to get change for the club, then to Kroger for their big meat sale. Made dinner, took a nap and then off to work
Saturday Mama finally got over being mad at me and life was back to normal. Great grandfather won't answer the phone, so he missed the call telling him that poker with the seniors was moved to noon and by the time I got up and checked the machine he had missed his game. Served leftovers for lunch and then Lee and I went to El Fenix (his favorite restaurant) for an early dinner. Came home, took a nap and then off to work again.
Got up early Sunday, after only 6 hours sleep, and made a giant roasting pan of soup to take to the club so they would have something to eat during the game. Took the soup to drop off @ 1:00 and presided over a scheduled staff meeting. Got home just in time to see the Cowboys loose their game...oh well!! Spent the rest of the day getting the house ready for the Red Hats luncheon that will be here on Thursday Did some things in Mama's room, cleaned the patio and hung some more pictures in the house. Worked 'till 11:oopm and then died in my chair.
Up this morning and found out the physical therapists was coming again. Then a supervisor came to reevaluate both greats and the grandfather. She told the Great grandfather he is not making any progress since he won't do the work except when they are her. Recertified him for 1 more month with threats to discontinue service unless he gets in gear. She told him at the rate he is going he will become a burden to everyone, won't be able to get our of bed by himself, or go to the bathroom alone. His leg will rot off. I sure hope he takes her talk to heart or he will end up in a nursing home. I told all the grands before we moved that at the point they couldn't wipe their own bottom or change their own diapers that we would have no choice but to place them somewhere else....and I wasn't kidding!! I have ordered a new exercise machine that work by vibrating, hope he will use it and that it actually does what they say it will, I'll let you know.
Took the female grands with me to run errands this afternoon and then Lee and I went to Pappadeaux for date night. When we came home I fell asleep in my chair for 2 hours. Taking care of 4 grands is rewarding, but alot of work. It's now 4:00 am and I'm finally ready to call it a day....good night!!

Not so Grand today
All the Grands were gone to the senior center playing bingo when I got up. My youngest daughter Sarah was coming for lunch so I got busy and made a stir-fry. She got here just before they got home. Mama went to her room and we were nearly through eating by the time she made it to the table. Finished up and got the dishes done when I heard Mama griping at the Grandfather for teasing her about shopping. He had said something about how she always returns everything she buys, which by the way is TRUE !! I guess she got her feelings hurt. She stomped off to her room ( as much as a 92 year old with a hip replacement can stomp). I followed her in and asked her what was wrong. She told me that nobody wanted her living here and then proceeded to repeat her comlaints from yesterdays blog. Man was she venting !! I called her on her bullshit and of course then she directed her anger at me. Told me she didn't like the way I had spoken to Sarah when I teased her about reading a brochure I had been looking at, considering buying an exercise machine. I told her Sarah knew I was teasing her, but Mama said her mother had "never spoken to her like that". I reminded her that she sure talks like that to her daughter and that Mom had been upset for 2 days now since she was being hateful and mean and taking it out on her.
She then complained once again about the lack of storage she has in her 2 rooms. My husband Lee had brought her another storage cabinet in the house yesterday (that she had been wanting for 2 weeks for) but it was still sitting in the hall because she just "didn't know where to put it" She then accused me of trying to control everyone. I told her between working and and taking care of all the things I do at home she had gone too far, she had hurt my feelings and I had to leave the room.
Mama decided to take a walk and just left withot saying anything to anyone. She stayed gone awhile and we started to worry she would go and fall down, hurt herself and it would be my fault for upsetting her. I had to leave for work, but looked for her first. There she was walking down the alley, called Mom and let her know Mama was OK and I went on to work. Talked to mom a little later and she said Mama had called her into her room, told her to sit down so she could talk to her. Mama said she just had to go walk and think. She asked Mom if she was upset and Mom said "yes, cause you've been mean, taking your bad mood out on me for 2 days".
Lee took the storage cabinet in and set it up. Of course later her had to go move it because it was not in the right place.....saw that one coming! When he went in to move it she told him he " always picked the most inoppertune times to do things"...oh well we tried.
We have all worked together to create this spoiled little old lady. Guess we're getting what we deserve! The Grandfather said it was his fault since whenever she thows her little fits he always apoligizes and gives her her way. I think there's a new day coming in their relationship.
We all had dinner together and the Grandfather actually stayed in the kitchen and helped do dishes....yup things are a changing. She's still mad at me and went to her room after dinner, didn't see her again tonight.
I sat down in my chair after dinner and fell asleep, I was exhaused after cooking 2 meals and working at the club today. Had a 2 hour nap...it was good! Went to Walmart with Lee @ 1:00 am and did the grocery shopping so I don't have to do it tomorrow.
Oh well tomorrow is another day and I can't wait to see what it may bring.
