In may my husband and I bought a new home and moved in my parents and grandparents. Now we have 3 generations living in one place. My husband Lee (53), myself (56), my mother Lois (73) and stepfather Larry(80), grandmother Opal (92) and step grandfather Bob (78) all live together. All my friends keep telling me we should be a reality show and that I needed to start a blog, so I started this blog.
Lee and I moved in May 20th, parents on May 24 and after building an additional bathroom for Opal (Mama) the Greats moved in on July 1. We had a giant garage sale in July also. It was the busiest, hottest summer of my life.
I have managed a nightclub for the last 13 years and my husband's DJ company provides the entertainment there. Everyone else is retired. So I pretty much have 2 jobs, the club and taking care of the Grands.
Larry, the Grand has early onset dementia, Bob the Great has severe Glaucoma with very limited vision and a bad leg. Opal the Great Mama broke her hip in February. She told the Dr.'s she refused to spend her life in a wheelchair and whatever therapy they give her to do she does double and is doing wonderful. I'll be sitting at my desk and see a flash of color fly behind me and realize it's her doing something !! Fortunately my mother is in pretty good health and is able to take on alot of responsibility.
My 1st purchase after moving was to buy a dining table large enough for us all to sit and have dinner together. I really want this to be a happy time for everyone. I keep telling them we are "The Happy Family". I suggested we all change our last name to Happy, but nobody is going for it..LOL
We are just one big happy family....most days!!
I guess one of the funniest things so far was the morning I woke up to my mother yelling. I came running into the kitchen to find the Grandfathers getting ready to throw down. The Great had taken the sports page to his room and the Grand was mad about it and was ready to rumble. The Great said "bring it on". I of course had to intervene. I suggested that if someone threw a punch all that would happen is they both would fall down and break a hip. If this happened and they ended up in the hospital I would not have time to visit them, but would make sure they were in the same room @ the hospital. After a moments thought they both went to their rooms. Then I had to have a sit down with each of them to suggest how they might have handled it better...I have become my Grands parent....life has flipped.
These last few months have been some of the happiest of my life. I am so fortunate to still have my mom and grandmother. Additionally the fact that we get along so great is a blessing. Don't get me wrong we've had our moments but our life is good!
Getting ready to have a good time watching the Cowboys in the family room and the Rangers in the parents living room. Some additional family and friends coming over. Gonna make a nacho bar and just turn this into a fun day for everyone (I hope).
